Correct Order of Speeches According to Wedding Speech Etiquette

If you`ve been designated to give a speech at a wedding then it is important to observe proper wedding speech etiquette during your speech. Depending on whether you are the best man, father of the bride or the groom giving the speech there is a normal protocol of order when the speeches are delivered. There are issues that should not be mentioned:

The couple`s past love life
No mention of politics or religion
No mention of previous marriages

There is a traditional order for speeches as dictated by wedding speech etiquette.

1. Father of the Bride Speech:

Traditionally, the father of the bride is the first to speak. He has place of honor because it is customary for him to pay for the wedding. It`s his task to welcome everyone. He also welcomes the groom`s parents into his family. The father of the bride comments on his daughter, her appearance, her personality and recounts some memorable incidents from her childhood. He makes mention of how proud he is of his daughter.

He would also extend a welcome to the groom on becoming a member of his family. It would be expected for the father of the bride to say he is happy with his daughter`s choice of husband and why. It would not be out of place to offer some words of advice about marriage and how to make it special.

Finally, the father of the bride must thank everyone and then propose a toast to the happy couple.

2. Groom`s Speech:

According to wedding speech etiquette the groom welcomes everyone present and makes the necessary thanks. He makes a point of thanking the bride`s parents for raising such a special person. He then goes on to say how beautiful his bride is and maybe quote incidents memorable to both of them as a couple. He thanks his best man for standing beside him and then toasts his bride.

3. Best Man Speech:

The best man thanks the groom for asking him to be best man. He then mentions the bride and comments on her appearance. It is appropriate for him to say speak highly of the bride. He then thanks the bridesmaids for their contribution.

The best man reads out messages from people who could not attend. This could be emotional if the people are close to the families. After this, the best man relates incidents shared by himself and the groom through the years of friendship. It is against etiquette to mention any unsavory and embarrassing incidents.

The best man proposes a toast to the groom and then the bride.

4. Brides Speech

It is not traditional for the bride to give a speech. Modern brides do say a few words.

The bride thanks all the guests and mentions people who unable to attend. Once again, this could be emotional. She could tell how she met the groom and relate a funny incident they`ve shared. The bride closes off by thanking those who were involved in arranging the wedding celebrations.
